Augmented Shadow2010format : interactive installation
dimension : 1050 * 1050 * 950
Augmented Shadow is a design experiment producing an artificial shadow effect through the use of tangible objects, blocks, on a displayable tabletop interface. Its goal is to offer a new type of user-experience. The project plays on the fact that shadows present distorted silhouettes depending on the light. Augmented Shadows take the distortion effect into the realm of fantasy. Shadows display below the objects according to the physics of the real world. However, the shadows themselves transform the objects into houses, occupied by shadow creatures. By moving the blocks around the table the user sets off series of reactions within this new fantasy ecosystem.

In this installation, the shadows exist both in a real and a virtual environment simultaneously. It thus brings augmented reality to the tabletop by way of a tangible interface. The shadow is an interface metaphor connecting the virtual world and users. Second, the unexpected user experience results from manipulating the users’ visual perceptions, expectations, and imagination to inspire re-perception and new understanding. Therefore, users can play with the shadows lying on the boundary between the real, virtual, and fantasy.

Augmented Shadow utilizes this unique interface metaphor for interactive storytelling. Maximizing the magical amusement of AR, it is embedding an ecosystem where imaginary objects and organic beings co-exist while each of them influences on each other’s life-cycle, even though it is not in use by users. Light and shadow play critical roles in this world’s functions causing chain reactions between virtual people, trees, birds, and houses as shown below.

A set of tangible blocks allows users to participate in the ecosystem. Users can influence on the system by playing with the blocks or observe the changes of the shadows as if kids were playing with an ant farm.

Projection Mapping for
Sae Byung Kwan2010format : projection mapping
collaboration : Hyunwoo Kim, Inhoe Gu
I figured it is worth to keep working with shadows : Among the elements making a projection mapping looks realistic, the shadow is independent from spectator's perspective, while the others are loosing the perspective depending on the view angle. It also conveys a sense of spiritual fantasy. In this installation the shadows are mapped on a single flat model of a building, but conveying powerful impression.

I directed a documentary film about Sae Byung Kwan, an ancient stronghold in Korea. This beautiful building is keeping the memories and history of war and peace of several hundred years ago. In this opening sequence, the shadows are used to emphasize the beauty of the building. They visualize the memories of the past which is subtly blended with the present, bringing the spirit into the physical world.

Luzes Relacionais2010format : interactive installation
collaboration : Ernesto Klar
I worked for new media artist Ernesto Klar as a programming assistant for his audio-visual installation "Luzes relacionais" (Relational Lights). In this project my task was to assist the artist in the development of the custom-software system (CV and computer graphics) using Max and Javascript. The installation has been recently exhibited at FILE Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil (2010), and is scheduled to be exhibited at more festivals and venues around world. You can read more details in Ernesto Klar's website.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22612/1021351/luzesRelacionais.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="167" width_o="800" height_o="200" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/22612/1021351/luzesRelacionais_o.jpg" align="left" />

“Luzes relacionais” (Relational Lights) is an interactive audio-visual installation that explores our relationship with the expressional-organic character of space. The installation uses light, sound, haze, and a custom-software system to create a morphing, three-dimensional light-space in which spectators actively participate, manipulating it with their presence and movements.

“Luzes relacionais” is a hommáge to the work and aesthetic inquiry of Brazilian artist Lygia Clark.

Image Processing Application2010format : software
collaboration : Atta Kim
I worked as a technical assistant for an artist, Atta Kim. I programmed an application that processes a large number of image manipulations for his project, 'Indala'. The final images are made by overlapping 10 thousand photographs for each, so he needed automate the work flow with an customized image application. The challenge was the source images around 30000*20000 pixels (about 2GB each).

AR Visual Music Synthesizer2009format : interactive installation
On-going project
This was one of technical researches for my thesis project : Tangible Interface for Visual Music Synthesis. This experiment provided me an initial idea about Augmented Shadow, so this project ended up as an experiment. Though it still shows some hints about combining a tangible interface and code-generated visuals, so I hope to work on it later some day. Applying AR technology, I could've gotten a decent method for providing additional visual representations of sound like below.

ofxAlamo2010format : interactive installation
collaboration : Joe Saavedra, Clay Ewing, Thanks to Jen Cotton, Zach Gage, and Zach Lieberman
A public space projection project using computer vision, in NoHo, NYC. The main idea was detecting the rotation of this cube at Astor Place, tracking the corners where infrared LEDs were attached. After figuring out the shape of the surfaces, some videos are projected on each surface, in real-time. I worked for the software using openFrameworks. More details about this project and the hardware part can be found at Joe Saavedra's Blog

Here is documentation from the last attempt. It was fail because of generator issues, and the IR lights not being bright enough :

Another big problem was how to use IR light. Joe found a nice way, here's the demonstration :
